With a dedicated purpose that unites two talented and determined designers, PODOLL, created by San Francisco based husband and wife team Josh Podoll and Lauren Berdell Podoll, introduces a men's and women's collection that is rooted in a myriad of eclectic artistic influences, a unique creative process and sustainable, environmentally conscious methods. Building on the success of their high end t- shirt line, Josh Podoll which is available at retailers such as Barneys New York and Fred Segal in LA, Josh Podoll, a successful exhibiting painter, and Lauren Berdell Podoll, a former women's contemporary buyer, joined forces to create a full high end collection that embodies their distinct aesthetic. Their vision came to life through PODOLL, which was launched in Spring 2007 and has already garnered a loyal following. Working together they demonstrate a potent sense of mutual creativity and reverence for their métier. "We collaborate fluidly from conception of each collection through final presentation so that each piece represents a blend of our complementary perspectives." says Josh Podoll, "We appreciate the history of our craft by utilizing traditional techniques and honoring all the players who participate in creating a garment." Lauren Berdell Podoll goes on to elaborate on the couple's goals for PODOLL, "In addition to communicating our vision through design, a primary concern for us is to empower the wearer to look and feel their best in clothing that was created with ethical responsibility in mind." Josh and Lauren remain committed to producing their collection in the United States at facilities that comply with rigorous fair labor standards. As a direct result of their vision, the PODOLL label is not only aesthetically original, but also an impassioned model of a responsible enterprise in the fashion world. The design team behind PODOLL carries an eclectic mix of backgrounds and tastes that merge into a singular vision, speaking directly to its core customers who appreciate superior hand crafted quality and inventive designs. For Lauren Berdell Podoll, a native of the San Francisco Bay Area, design has always been as much about process as product. She expressed her creative fervor as a child through experimenting with fabric and designing clothing from simple sketches. Graduating cum laude from Duke University with a double major in Art History and Psychology, she pursued careers in advertising and interior architecture. But it was art that she loved, and through creative process that she rediscovered fashion. Lauren turned back towards her early inspirations when she became the buyer for the cult AB Fits boutiques in San Francisco. Driven by her personal desire to create, Lauren eventually realized she would not be satisfied until she challenged herself by designing a fashion collection. It was through AB Fits that Lauren met Josh, thus beginning a collaboration that neither could have anticipated. With architecture and psychology informing her strong sense of form and construction, Lauren is dedicated to wearability. But it is Lauren's curiosity, carried from those first youthful sketches and designs that make her vision unique. For Josh Podoll, a Seattle born artist who grew up in a small mid-western town, the turn towards fashion should come as no surprise.  After completing an undergraduate degree in photography, Josh traveled to Kenya, Germany, and finally India, where he spent nearly a year meditating and teaching in Lucknow, Uttrapradesh. It was in India that Josh commissioned his first piece of hand tailored clothing, and with it discovered a new art form—one inspired by the meeting of craft and function.  Josh returned to the University of Iowa to receive formal training as a painter, and after graduating with his MFA, found success exhibiting with Feature, Inc. Gallery in New York and around the world. But something was missing. Reminded of the tailor in India who had inspired him, Josh designed a collection of t-shirts that fused art with lifestyle. Its start could not have been more serendipitous. At his first sale, Josh met Lauren, then the buyer for a San Francisco store. Their partnership would culminate in the creation of a collection that aims, through socially and environmentally conscious design, to make living a work of art.
